On Sunday, March 24th at 2:30 PM, Kathleen Galop , an expert in the historic landscapes of the Essex and Union County Park Systems in NJ, will lecture on the Olmsted Brothers’ contributions to New Jersey at the historic Drake House in Plainfield.
Plainfield is the home of the famed historic Shakespeare Garden which was designed by the Olmsted Brothers and installed by the Plainfield Garden Club. The garden features old varieties of plants and flowers cited in the works of Shakespeare. It has been preserved through the garden club’s efforts since 1927.
An exhibit of the Plainfield Garden Club is on display at the Drake House from March through May. The “ladies” of the club have earned a coveted spot on the New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail for their work in the garden as well as other civic, environmental and preservation efforts.
The exhibit will also feature the garden club’s 1961 design for a garden at the Drake House as well as other notable gardens in Plainfield. Many of these were the personal gardens of the “ladies” and seven have been archived by the club for the Smithsonian.
